Memorial to Countee Cullen
ferrocement, unique cast
72" x 54" x 26"
1995
A commission from the Bronx Council on the Arts for exhibition in Woodlawn
Cemetery, honoring the poet of the Harlem Renaissance. Cullen, who died
at 43, contemplates his youthful fame in the form of a "marble" bust. Both "marble" and "bronze" are
made of cement, evoking the "rare earth" in his poem. Now in the collection
of the New York Public Library.
